SPRED is a faith formation program designed to meet the spiritual needs of persons with developmental disabilities or significant learning needs in partnership with catechist helpers. It is focused on a strong sacramental program where we come to know God through relationships with others in a collaborative setting.
Our community of friends and catechist helpers meets twelve times a year with a focus on liturgy, worship, and sacraments through the development of personal relationships using the symbolic method of SPRED. Catechist preparation sessions are held the week prior to the total community session. There are a total of 24 sessions based on a curriculum developed and supported by the SPRED community in Chicago, Illinois and internationally.
Each meeting session has three components. We begin with activities to quiet our minds and to prepare ourselves to hear God’s message. In catechesis, we focus on the creation of a dynamic relationship of love with God, entering the mystery of faith and communion with Jesus Christ our Savior. Moving into the third section, agape is celebrated through friendship and sharing of food. We close by joining in song.
Each SPRED community consists of 4-6 friends and 8 catechists for a specific age group. At St. Patrick’s, we have a community of older adults and hope to expand age groups as the need presents itself.
If you would like to participate as a catechist or as a friend, please contact the parish office.
